Ditched Structure: Work in Progress

Published on: Aug. 20, 2010

It has been a busy week for the staff at Duck Creek. Things are moving forward, and that is GREAT news. The contractors moved in this week and started working on the Ditch 1/111 structure on the west side of Pool 1. Unit A from the east is closed from the Pool 1 road because of construction.

We typically close the Ditch 1/111 structure to stop water flowing down the ditch and divert it into Pool 1. This is necessary to recharge water that is lost either to flooding Pools 2 and 3 or from evaporation and transpiration from aquatic plants. One problem that occurs when you stop flowing water is that you stop everything else that is going along for the ride. Along with other treasures this is mainly debris and sediment. The current structure also complicates the issue because it has a support beam in the middle of the structure. Even when the gates are open debris can become lodged and create quite a backlogged mess of timber and dirt. Our new structure design will decrease this problem by being able to lay flat and flush the system when the gate is down. There will not be a support in the middle to cause additional complications. This is one spot where we can work smarter and not have to be constantly pulling stuff out of the ditch.

A coffer dam has been put across the ditch so that the new structure can be put in. Over the next few weeks a base will be put down and the foundation of the new structure will be poured. Most of the water coming down the ditch go into Pool 1. Some water could potentially flood into Pool 8 or be pumped into Ditch 1 below the structure. The last two months have been exceedingly dry around Duck Creek which will benefit this work. The contractors are moving ahead and hopefully will accomplish this work in the next two months if the weather holds.

Interesting to see there is NO debris dam or steel debris rack installed in front of the current gates to catch the big debris. No wonder they clog up. Are there any plans to install any kind of debris dam after you build the new gates(?), if not.....you will still have the same problem. A simple steel structure in the shape of an "A" would at least divert a lot of the debris to the sides.
