Deer Hunters Feed the Hungry
Let’s see. Deer hunters get to enjoy hunting, hungry families get tasty low-fat protein and deer numbers are kept in a healthy balance. There’s nothing but good things when it comes to “Share the Harvest,” a program supported by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Conservation Federation of Missouri.
Last year 6,500 hunters donated 322,469 pounds of venison, which would be almost 1.3 million quarter-pound burgers. That’s a lot of food! Hunters just need to take the deer to participating meat processors who in turn will share the amount chosen with charitable agencies. The cost of processing the meat is up to the hunter, although there are funds to help reduce costs of a whole deer.
Our Protection Division chief, Dennis Steward, reminded me that this is a good time to get the word out before major deer hunting begins. So tell your friends and family. It’s a great season to share the harvest.
