Photo Fascination

Published on: May. 14, 2012

I just visited the MDC 75th Anniversary Photo Contest page on "flickr" for the first time, and it was all I could do to tear myself away to write this post. Holy cow, what a visual feast! The page has more than 7,500 photos of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants, landscapes, outdoor recreation and natural phenomena from photographers all across the state. To say the selection is diverse is like saying the Grand Canyon is big. You simply can’t imagine it until you go there.

For example, you would never guess how many people have managed to capture unusual phenomena like lightning, rainbows, lighting WITH rainbows and the aurora borealis. If you missed out on seeing the historic irruption of snowy owls into Missouri last winter, don’t fret;  you can view dozens of amazing photos of the big, white birds, thanks to the photo contest. There are amazing animal photos along with stunning landscapes and captivating photos of people.

I don’t envy the judges who must choose one winner from each of the seven entry categories. On the other hand, it will be fun for the rest of us voting for the “best of show” photo among category winners published in the July issue of Missouri Conservationist Magazine.

Browsing through the entries is a fantastic way to start the day. Get a mug of your favorite hot beverage and visit flickr.com/groups/mdc75thanniversary/. You will be glad you did.
