Spring Peepers Calling

Published on: Mar. 15, 2008

You might think I’ve gone overboard on animal calls the past few weeks. But after a winter of mostly stillness, it just gets you going to hear life out there again! And spring peepers are one of the first, early signs that winter is about to be history.

spring peeperThe Missouri Department of Conservation’s Natural Events Calendar notes that March 16 is typically a peak for spring peeper calling (in mid-Missouri, I presume). I heard them one evening last week when it was 35 degrees— which amazed me that they could do anything in such cold.

They’re only about an inch long, so it’s also impressive that they’re so easily heard. Our new toads and frogs brochure is available online if you want to know more.
