Celebrate the Opening of Quail Season

Northern Bobwhite

Published on: Nov. 2, 2010

Friend and coworker, Aaron Jeffries, and I celebrated the opening of quail season. We were accompanied by my German wirehair pointer, Heidi and Aaron’s German shorthair, Babe. We hunted a Department-owned prairie in west central Missouri. The dogs locked up on two coveys in the first hour and we ended the three-hour hunt on one last covey flush. In spite of the very dry conditions and wind we witnessed some grand dog work and the birds held tight even while working the singles.

Is anyone else celebrating the start of quail season appropriately?

After four early morning covey counts, in perfect October weather, with no whistles heard, celebrating was deemed not in order. Three hunts of 175 acres produced no quail. What looks like great habitat to me was apparently deficient to BWQ when faced with two wet springs and a tough winter. Even though I'm discouraged, I have to believe in, "build it and they will come."

Opening day we found 4 coveys on public land. This past weekend found 3 coveys while hunting private ground and one of the coveys had 18-20 mature birds. Out of those 7 coveys, 2 of them were very young birds!

We were at Hi Lonesome Prairie Conservation Area. They did not have the spring and summer rains that you had in north Missouri or the winter either!!

Hi. Did not go so well for us. We hunted Poosey two days and Whetfield one day. Our Setter has a great nose and not one bird found. Where did you have such good luck?
