Indian Paintbrush

Two distinct color forms of Indian Paintbrush grow side-by-side on a small glade at Indian Trail Conservation Area near Salem in Dent County. The showy color derives from bracts, specialized leaves which surround the inconspicuous flowers. The plant is found on prairies, glades and roadsides, except in the northwest and the bootheel. The red form is most common. -- Jim Rathert
