MDC employee Jake Rieken carries the elk calf into the holding pen to be released with its mother.
Based on current information and knowledge, the elk restoration goals include a well-defined zone, habitat and herd management guidelines, health protocols and public input.
In July, 2010, the Conservation Commission directed the Department to re-initiate development of an elk restoration plan.
The plan calls for releasing up to 150 elk into a 346-square-mile “restoration zone” in and around the Peck Ranch Conservation Area in Shannon, Carter and Reynolds counties. View the detailed map.
