Volunteer in St. Louis

Are you an outdoor enthusiast with a desire to share your passion with others? MDC is seeking dedicated individuals with outdoor recreation experience and a willingness to educate others about sustainable use of Missouri’s natural resources. Applicants should possess good communication and time-management skills, the ability to work in fast-paced environments, a willingness to learn new skills, are capable of working without constant supervision, and the ability to take direction well from staff and/or other volunteers. The volunteer programs available in the St. Louis Region are listed below. Hunter education needs volunteer instructors

MDC's staff and trained volunteer instructors teach hunter education courses statewide at various locations. Courses include firearms, proper firearms use, hunting traditions, ethics, conservation, safe hunting practices and hunting responsibilities, and they comply with the Safe Schools Act. Our volunteer instructors are dedicated, concerned citizens who give their time to train new and prospective hunters. They realize that hunter education is an important key in the future of hunting. Qualifications to be a Volunteer Hunter Education Instructor include the following: minimum of 18 years of age, complete a 10-hour Student Certification Course, complete a 10-hour Instructor Course, assist a certified Hunter Education Instructor with a 10-hour Student Certification Course. To remain active, volunteer instructors must teach at least two student certification courses every two years.

We need volunteer naturalists

As members of the Conservation Department’s Outreach and Education Division, volunteer naturalists help Missourians conserve and enjoy the natural world. They improve the visitor experience at conservation facilities by educating and interacting with the public. In addition, our volunteers assist with the planning, development, and presentation of interpretive and educational programs, hikes and special events related to the conservation and management of Missouri’s fish, forests and wildlife resources. Volunteer naturalists are expected to serve 10 hours per month and attend monthly meetings. For more information, contact the volunteer coordinator for the site you would like to volunteer.

Shooting Ranges and Outdoor Education Centers need volunteers

Shooting Ranges & Outdoor Education Centers provide safe places for hunters to practice their skills and ethics on the range and in the field. Shooting range volunteers not only assist shooters and maintain range-rule compliance, they also assist with hunter education programs, firearm instructional courses, outdoor skills curriculum, archery programs, youth day camps, youth hunting clinics, hunt guides, fishing seminars, trapping clinics, primitive skills, special events and more. Our volunteers come from many employment and outdoor experience backgrounds. Range volunteers are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per month and attend quarterly meetings. If you would like to be part of this rewarding and challenging volunteer program, contact the Outdoor Education Center Supervisor at the range nearest you.
