Fire Department Assistance Programs
Cost-share for wildfire-fighting equipment
Every year, Missouri fire departments serving communities of less than 10,000 can apply for a 50-percent funding opportunity to help buy fire-fighting equipment. This equipment must also be suitable for controlling wildfires. Winning applicants receive reimbursement for up to one-half of the equipment’s purchase price, with a maximum reimbursement of $3,000. Available funding, which is provided by the U.S. Forest Service and MDC, exceeds $300,000 annually.
Applications for 2016 equipment grants are due October 30, 2015.
For questions about this grant opportunity or to receive an application, contact the MDC Fire Program Supervisor at 573-522-4115, ext. 3113, or email Ben.Webster@mdc.mo.gov.
Federal equipment for local fire departments
Fire departments across the state are eligible to receive excess federal property, including various types of vehicles and firefighting or emergency-response equipment. Send requests for excess property through to your local Department of Conservation Forestry representative.
Two excess-property programs and how they work
The excess firefighting and emergency-response property is available through an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Conservation and is acquired through two federally sponsored programs.
Federal Excess Personal Property
The first program is known to as the Federal Excess Personal Property program or FEPP. This program allows for the acquisition of federal excess property, but ownership of the property remains with the federal government. Local fire departments may borrow this property, but they must return it to the Department of Conservation when the need for it has passed, or the property is no longer functional.
Fire Fighter Property
The second excess property program is called the Fire Fighter Property program or FFP. This program allows the Department to acquire federal excess property, and it also permits the Department to transfer ownership of this property to local Missouri fire departments.
Both programs’ equipment is processed and housed at the Rural Forest Fire Equipment Center in Lebanon, Missouri.
For questions about either of the federal excess-property programs, contact the MDC Fire Program Supervisor at 573-522-4115, ext. 3113, or email Ben.Webster@mdc.mo.gov.
